POCKET HISTORIES

Pocket Histories is an ongoing series of miniature oil paintings that navigates between intimate daily moments, dynamic sports scenes, pop culture figures, and art historical references. The title references both the diminutive scale of the works and their function as repositories of personal and canonical history—a collection of subjects that capture individual interest alongside broader cultural memory. Each work is built up with oil paint mixed with sand, creating expressive, textured surfaces with an almost sculptural quality. The granular material adds a raw, tactile dimension that demands close viewing, transforming small-scale paintings into physical objects of contemplation. The gestural application of materials unifies these diverse subjects—from everyday observations to recognizable cultural moments—giving each piece a consistent energy despite varying content. The series questions what merits preservation and representation: personal fascinations exist alongside established historical narratives, suggesting that both carry equal weight in constructing meaning. Through their compact format and material richness, Pocket Histories proposes an alternative archive where the intimate and the iconic coexist.
